INTRODUCING DIGITAL STORYTELLING INTO THE CLASSROOM

Since the ancient era, storytelling has served as a popularly accepted way, used to pass and spread knowledge, heritage and legacy from one generation to the next and create target audience. In contemporary times, the use of technology has greatly influenced the world of education. It has assisted educators with an opportunity to learn and enhance their knowledge, harness digital skills which, has held a very positive impact and brought about a revolution in the quality and standards of education imparted in the world today. The integration of such digitalized technologies, has enlarged the scope of student interaction, engagement, and has also contributed in building up of self-confidence, and mental growth of the talented youth of this age, which has in-turn, brought them success.

However, education systems are a face with many challenges. One of it lays stress on how to intensify student interaction so as to get better educational outcomes. An innovative pedagogical approach that can definitely engage students in deep, high-order and meaningful thinking is Digital Storytelling. It is a powerful model that possesses the ability to integrate learning activities with instructional messages that can fabricate a constructive, engaging, healthy and proper conducive e-learning environment that provokes curiosity among students. The entire concept is laid on the fundamentals of teaching and learning which certainly exhibit high potentiality. It helps students to develop creativity and deal with problems in their own innovative ways and enables effective story development through collaboration of ideas and interpersonal communicational professionalism.

It is regarded as an evolutionary method, as radical changes have come in its way due to time-and-again changing of the process of story creation and its narration. In present context, it can be considered as a merger of traditional storytelling and digital technology and is described as a modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Thus, Digital storytelling is implied as an embodiment of multimedia production which can be utilized thoroughly in the sphere of education. The digitalized storytelling articulates in its framework, as to how storytelling can be used at different levels of education. It also incorporates learners ranging from pre- primary to university and even professional e-learning content writers.

The last two decades have witnessed significant growth in digital technologies with the coming up of various social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc which have metamorphosed the global world and enabled organisations to connect with incredible people, share intimate stories and build a network of ever-expanding communities who share common interests. On such platforms, well-crafted stories, help in introducing a new topic in the audience very effectively, and also possess the ability to engage people in an interactive, yet meaningful talking sessions. Also, creating stories that evolve human bond and emotional resonance continue to inspire people, for instance, “Humans of New York”. Thus, Storytelling exhibits great social consequences as it continues to inspire and capture people who can contribute ideas, energy and resources. The coining of several e-learning websites, mobile and news-reading apps like Eckovation, etc. have brought learning technology to the mobile phone and efficiently connected home with school. All of these are united by the same vision, that is, imparting free of cost education to people who exhibit a strong desire to study and binds all students, teachers and parents in a triangular network. Thus, it can be concluded that social media serves as a dynamic, and powerful weapon that is more of a mind game, rather than technology!
