Gyanodaya: New Hopes for Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Godda

According to the Census of 2011, India’s female literacy rate is just 65% lower than the world average of 80% but there has been a significant improvement since 1971 when it was mere 18%. Although in Jharkhand this number is still lower than the national average and stands at 55.42% , highlighting the necessity of efforts required to stand along with the nation. In the coming decade, India is going to have the largest and the youngest working population in the world. Therefore, it is crucial for the youth to be not just literate but to be job ready in order to accelerate the growth of the country.

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya Scheme was introduced by the Government of India in 2004 to remove gender disparities persisting in rural areas and majorly among disadvantaged communities. It is a residential school scheme where basic necessities of girl students are taken care of to encourage girl students to study and hence increase the enrolments at upper primary level.

Gyanodaya Project in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya

Eckovation with the help of Godda District Administration and Adani Group has introduced Gyanodaya smart class in 50 schools of the district in the first phase, which will subsequently be introduced into more than 600 schools in the next phase. The initiative aims to provide Quality School Education in the district by leveraging technology with a focus on ensuring continuous monitoring and accountability in the system. The model is based on adaptive learning which caters to the particular needs of individual schools and students.

According to the survey conducted by the Eckovation team, it was found that shortage of teachers is one significant reason for increased dropout rate and it has been a hurdle for students in pursuing their dreams. Gyanodaya classes came as a solution to ensure continuous delivery of quality education to students so that they never stop learning.

A student, China Rani tells how she aspires to become a doctor  to serve the society and envisage a better future for her family. But the lack of resources restrain these kids from chasing their dreams. With Combined efforts of Eckovation team and teachers the regular career guidance and motivational sessions to these students has helped to build their self confidence, rediscover themselves and envision a better tomorrow for themselves. Their eyes now glitter with emotions with a strong desire in mind and a goal to achieve.

After two months of learning through Gyanodaya smart class, a significant change has been seen in the attitude of students as well as teachers. Mrs. Neelima Kumari, a social science teacher of KGBV Pathargama says that “smart class has provided the students a tool to comprehend the difficult concepts very easily and helped teachers to  deliver concepts to students more effectively”, this is ensuring better learning outcomes which can be seen by the performance evaluation of students where it was observed that the students scoring 80-100 % increased from a mere 4% to a whooping 62%.
